"A sewage dike collapse flooded streets with wastewater in Paita on Monday, forcing the evacuation of a school and triggering a health emergency in several sectors of the city. Footage shows streets inundated with sewage water, with motorcycles stranded amid the overflow in the Paita Alta municipality. The Sanitation Services Provider Entity (EPS) Grau S.A., responsible for the potable water supply, reported that the incident originated from work carried out by the contractor YERMHI in charge of a road project. According to preliminary information, the contractor installed a bypass to divert sewage into a provisional lagoon without authorisation or the EPS's knowledge, resulting in sewage accumulating. The structure collapsed due to excess water stored within it, leading to overflow and sewage flowing into the streets. In response to the situation, EPS Grau temporarily suspended potable water service in the El Tablazo sector, a measure that will remain in place until the system's conditions are restored. In the San Martin Oriente sector, the overflow damaged homes and forced the evacuation of students from the San Francisco school due to the risk of exposure to sewage. No official assessment of the number of homes or vehicles affected has been released at the time of publication."
