"Protesters gathered in Clerkenwell, London, on Monday to mark International Workers’ Day, or May Day, with demonstrations highlighting labour rights, migration policies and global conflicts. Footage shows officers arresting protesters and placing several into police vehicles, while other demonstrators continued to march through Clerkenwell Green carrying trade union banners, flags and placards showing, among others, former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. “It’s an international day to celebrate the contribution of labour to the economy and to society. It is the day of the workers. But we have to fight for it,” said one protester. Campaigners also raised concerns over the rights of migrant domestic workers in the UK. “For those who came here after 2012, they don't have the right to renew their visa, no right for settlement, no right for citizenship, but they all fall into the system of modern slavery,” said Mimi, a union representative for domestic workers. Other demonstrators linked labour struggles to broader geopolitical issues, including conflicts in the Middle East and South Asia, calling for solidarity among workers globally. “We are here for the solidarity for the workers of all of the world… and to highlight human rights violations,” said another protester, referencing the situation in Kashmir. The rally also featured slogans such as 'Workers of all countries unite!' and 'Power to the people, not to fascists and billionaires,' as participants marched and drummed through the streets. May Day, observed annually on May 1, is recognised worldwide as a day to commemorate the struggles and achievements of workers, with demonstrations often addressing labour rights, social justice and political issues."
