The BJP’s breakthrough in West Bengal was driven less by major expansion of its own base and more by a split in the Muslim vote that had long consolidated behind the TMC in minority-dominated districts such as Murshidabad, Malda and Uttar Dinajpur. The fragmentation of minority votes among the Congress, Left and smaller regional outfits like AJUP weakened the TMC in closely contested seats, while the BJP benefited from parallel consolidation of Hindu voters.
