"South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Mozambican President Daniel Chapo concluded a high-level working visit in Pretoria on Tuesday, aimed at stabilising bilateral relations through new agreements spanning energy, border security, and the management of foreign nationals. "We've had very extensive discussions on matters of mutual interest that span the economy, security, as well as some social issues," Ramaphosa stated. Ramaphosa emphasised that while South Africa remains a ‘kind and welcoming’ nation, his administration will tighten the enforcement of labour laws to ensure only documented workers are employed, citing the ‘tough economic challenges’ currently facing the country. "We also say to employers in South Africa that we've passed a law that people who do not have the necessary work permits… should not be employed," Ramaphosa said. "President Chapo and I agreed that we must continue cooperating to find solutions." For his part, President Chapo described the relationship between the two nations as an inseparable partnership, labelling the borders ‘artificial’ and rooted in a shared history of struggle against apartheid. “South Africa is Mozambique. Mozambique is South Africa. We are brothers between two countries and two peoples,” he said. President Chapo outlined plans to boost cooperation in energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure, noting that Mozambique’s gas reserves serve as a primary engine for regional development. "With gas, we will build power plants and transmission lines from Mozambique to South Africa to increase our capacity to industrialise in Mozambique," Chapo added. The talks come amid rising social tensions and protests in South Africa, as high unemployment fuels demands for job protection and the deportation of undocumented migrants."
