'We are a people who love our sovereignty' - Sheinbaum rejects foreign interference during the Battle of Puebla ceremony

"The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted the historical relationship that the country maintains with the United States but ruled out any type of foreign interference during the ceremony this Tuesday for the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. In her speech in the state of Puebla, the Mexican leader recalled the cooperation between Benito Juárez and Abraham Lincoln during the French intervention between 1862 and 1867, when the former U.S. president supported the republican government. "To our neighbors, to the United States, we say, let us remember the great moment of relationship between [Benito] Juárez and [Abraham] Lincoln. The recognition of the Republic and the support for Juárez is one of the most commendable actions of our historical relationship," she stated. Despite acknowledging the close ties between both countries, Sheinbaum warned that Mexico will maintain a firm stance in defending its sovereignty, emphasizing that international cooperation does not imply subordination. "No foreign power is going to tell Mexicans how to govern ourselves (...) We are a people who love our freedom, our independence, our sovereignty, and we are always willing to defend it," she asserted. In the civic-military parade, Sheinbaum was accompanied by the governor of Puebla, Alejandro Armenta, and civil and military authorities. The event took place at the mausoleum of General Ignacio Zaragoza. The Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, is considered a symbol in the defense of Mexican sovereignty, as more than 4,500 soldiers commanded by Ignacio Zaragoza managed to defeat the French troops of Napoleon III."
