Meta faces maximum €20bn fine from Irish regulator over ‘dark patterns’ from recommender systems

Ireland’s media regulator Coimisiún na Meán has announced two new investigations into Meta platforms Facebook and Instagram, to determine whether it is using “dark patterns” to “manipulate” and prevent EU citizens from choosing their own algorithmic recommender systems, as is now required under EU law.
