MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines and Japan on Tuesday established a working group to advance defense equipment and technology cooperation, including discussions on the possible early transfer of Japanese destroyers and patrol aircraft. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. signed a joint statement in Makati City creating the group, which will bring together policy, operational and equipment officials from both defense establishments. The mechanism will serve as a platform to coordinate and advance cooperation on defense equipment and technology, including training, maintenance and sustainment, operational coordination, information-sharing and the management of transferred equipment.
