Keir Starmer urged to 'take a page from Donald Trump playbook' as UK migrant crisis nears grim milestone

Sir Keir Starmer has been urged to "take a page out of Donald Trump's playbook" as the UK's migrant crisis remains on track to reach a staggering 200,000 illegal migrant arrivals. Speaking to GB News, Chairman of Republicans Overseas UK Greg Swenson praised the US President for "shutting the border down" and cracking down on illegal migration. Mr Swenson said of the UK's migrant crisis: "It's remarkable, and you should take a few pages out of the playbook in the US. "It hasn't been perfect here, but thank goodness for President Trump because now he's shut the border down." TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say The Republican recalled the US's own migrant crisis in 2020, when the Democrats "let over 10 million illegal migrants cross the border". He said: "Remember, President Trump was elected in 2016, predominantly on anti-illegal migration. And so what did the Democrats do in 2020? "Instead of moving to the centre on the issue, they open the border and let 10 to 15,000,000 illegal migrants cross the border and then distribute them around the United States, mostly in sanctuary cities and states. "And then of course, President Trump won again in 2024, and now he's shut the border down, so the UK should take a page out of that playbook." Offering his response, broadcaster Paul Cox declared the country's illegal migrant crisis is an "illegal invasion of our shores". He told GB News: "It's a terrible joke on the back of a statistic that's probably likely to happen tomorrow, and that's 200,000 of these men would have arrived in the UK via this method in that time period. "I mean 200,000...that's remarkable." Mr Cox criticised political leaders for "not seeing any real issue" in the surging numbers of illegal Channel crossings. He fumed: "This should be, irrespective of politics a front page story, because in for all intents and purposes this is an invasion. It's an illegal invasion of our shores. "And what's worse is we have political leaders that support this and don't see any real issue in it, and almost see it as just desserts for past misdemeanours." Mr Cox also highlighted another shocking statistic, that just 495 illegal migrants, as part of small boat arrivals from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iran, and Iraq, have been deported since 2018. He said: "I'm not saying that every asylum seeker is evil in some way, but it's undeniable that all the crime statistics that we are most worried about right now seem to have increased since this problem started. "It doesn't take a genius. We have to do something about it." A Home Office spokesman said: "This Government is bearing down on small boat crossings. "The Home Secretary has signed a landmark new deal with France to boost enforcement action on beaches and put people smugglers behind bars. "This builds on joint work that has stopped over 42,000 illegal migrants attempting to cross the channel since the election." Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
