"The Syrian city of Al-Hasakah inaugurated the restored Saint George Cathedral of the Syriac Orthodox Church after years of renovation work on Tuesday. Footage shows the opening ceremony and local scout groups welcoming attendees with musical performances. Patriarch Mar Ignatius Aphrem II Karim is seen receiving a warm welcome from clerics and worshippers before cutting the ceremonial ribbon to officially reopen the cathedral. In his address, the patriarch said the event carried 'multiple implications and messages', reaffirming that "Christians have resided here on their ancestral lands for thousands of years. They remain resolute in their commitment to stay." Mar Maurice Amsih, Metropolitan of Al-Jazira and the Euphrates for the Syriac Orthodox Church, described the day as a “spiritual wedding for Al-Jazira and for Syria”. He said the cathedral, which dates back nearly a century, had undergone years of restoration. "We commemorate those who served this church and have departed from the world of misery to the world of eternity," he persisted. Tamim Antir, the official overseeing the restoration work, said repairs covered the church’s concrete structure, damaged ceilings and eroded surfaces, as well as interior and exterior decorative work aimed at restoring the cathedral’s eastern architectural character. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Saint George Cathedral is the largest and oldest church in the region. Built in 1956, it serves as the seat of the Al-Jazira and Euphrates Diocese, covering Al-Hasakah and Deir Ezzor provinces. The cathedral covers around 950 square metres in the city centre and can accommodate up to 1,200 worshippers."
