'Corrupt second round' - Presidential candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga calls for protest after questioning electoral process in Peru

"The presidential candidate of Popular Renewal, Rafael López Aliaga, called this Wednesday for a national mobilization in rejection of the work carried out by the National Jury of Elections (JNE) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) during the recent presidential elections on April 12, 2026, in Peru. In the images, the candidate is seen walking with his supporters, waving Peruvian flags amid improvised chants and an atmosphere of camaraderie. At the scene, the political leader directly accused the president of the JNE, Roberto Burneo, and the head of the ONPE, Piero Corvetto, of failing to ensure the transparency of the democratic process, stating that he does not recognize any election. "I’ll tell you something in advance, we are not going to recognize any election here. It will be an illegitimate government," said Aliaga. During his speech, the candidate assured that he will not recognize the official results and stated that the citizens have the right to protest against what he considers irregularities in the administration of the elections. The candidate also argued that both the ONPE and the JNE failed to fulfill the constitutional mandate to protect the popular will of the citizens. "It’s not going to be that easy, Mr. Burneo. (...) You are not fulfilling your mission. You are not fulfilling what the Peruvian State entrusted to you, to oversee the popular will, which is the foundation of democracy," the candidate stated. At the scene, the protesters expressed distrust towards the electoral institutions, claimed to feel excluded from the process, and demanded an independent audit of the results. "ONPE is a corrupt institution, the National Jury of Elections too. These two entities have completely fractured democracy in Peru," commented Rosa López, a protester. Rafael López Aliaga obtained 11.8 percent of the votes, coming in third place in the recent elections behind Keiko Fujimori of Popular Force, who obtained more than 17 percent of the votes, followed by Roberto Sánchez of Together for Peru with 12 percent."
