MANILA, Philippines — Former Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares has condemned the “bill shock” experienced by millions of electricity consumers in April and May, as rates rose to a record-high P14.35 per kilowatt-hour. Colmenares, who described the situation as a form of “legalized robbery” against ordinary Filipinos, called on Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) to renegotiate all power supply agreements with coal and gas plants to make them “peso-denominated” instead of “dollar-indexed.” For the former lawmaker, it is unacceptable for consumers to shoulder the burden when the peso weakens because of what he described as “dollar-denominated contracts.” RELATED STORY: Meralco hikes […]...
