"The Presidential Regiment of the Moscow Kremlin Commandant’s Service is marking its 90th anniversary - a milestone for one of Russia’s most recognisable ceremonial military units. Footage filmed in central Moscow on April 2 shows soldiers marching in perfect formation across Cathedral Square, while cavalrymen rehearse intricate manoeuvres against the backdrop of the Kremlin’s historic walls. The video also features the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, one of the capital’s most symbolic military traditions. "Firstly, it’s a unique unit; secondly, it’s the only one of its kind in the country," said Kremlin veteran Alexei Kulakovsky. "From all over Russia, people come: someone from Voronezh, from Krasnoyarsk… Serving in the Kremlin is probably the most honourable thing - representing the country." For many servicemen, the regiment carries not only prestige, but also intense personal meaning. Serviceman Mikhail Bulgakov recalled how he felt during his first guard change ceremony. "During the guard change, you feel proud not only of yourself but also of your comrades," he said. "When you step out onto the parade ground, honestly, everything inside freezes. You walk, focused only on your steps, and after firing the carbine, nothing else matters." The regiment’s cavalry squadron remains one of the most visually striking elements of Kremlin ceremonies. Squadron commander Sergei Ivanenko said the performances depend on absolute coordination between rider and horse. "Through co-ordinated training and repeated practice, we build trust between the rider and the horse. As a result, we achieve our goals," he explained. "We have various breeds - Trakehner, Hanoverian, and native Russian horses." Founded on April 8, 1936, the Presidential Regiment is responsible for protecting senior state officials and securing the Kremlin complex. It also carries out honour guard duties at the Eternal Flame and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, while taking part in major state ceremonies and official events. The regiment officially celebrates its anniversary on May 7."
