'Gateway to the world!' - Oman launches landmark Greater Muscat project as urban blueprint for Vision 2040

"Oman launched its landmark 'Greater Muscat' initiative on Thursday as part of its integrated urban development strategy under the slogan: "Greater Muscat - An Enduring Legacy, A Renewed Vision." Footage shows models of the project, while screens displayed details through computer-generated presentations. Participants were also seen speaking with visitors during the event. Jamal Al-Hadi, media advisor to Oman’s Minister of Housing, described the project as among the largest initiatives resulting from the National Urban Development Strategy, which serves as the spatial framework for achieving Oman Vision 2040. He described the Greater Muscat plan as one of Oman’s main 'gateways to the world' and a key hub for attracting opportunities, investment, and international engagement. Yacoub Al-Harithi, Director of the Greater Muscat Project, highlighted that one of the main objectives of the structure plan is to create a 'connected Muscat' by developing and activating an integrated public transportation system across multiple levels. According to Oman News Agency, the Greater Muscat Structure Plan forms part of the Oman Vision 2040 framework for sustainable urban development. The agency added that the plan covers an urban corridor extending more than 80 kilometres between Muscat and South Al Batinah, with a waterfront stretching nearly 100 kilometres and featuring mountains, valleys, and coastal landscapes. The project aims to transform the city through five key pillars, including expanding green spaces, developing public transportation networks and light rail connections, stimulating economic growth through new economic clusters, and creating hundreds of thousands of housing units and active waterfront areas. The plan also seeks to improve infrastructure efficiency, enhance sustainability, reduce emissions, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050."
