'No vetoes, no forbidden topics' - Lula defends Brazilian sovereignty, proposes cooperation with US after meeting Trump in Washington

"Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that his country is willing to 'discuss any topic' with the United States, asserting that no foreign force will interfere in the democracy and national sovereignty of the Brazilian people. At a press conference from the Brazilian embassy in Washington DC on Thursday, just hours after his meeting at the White House with Donald Trump, Lula highlighted the cordial tone of the conversation and noted that he sought to create a more relaxed atmosphere during the meeting with the US president, despite recent diplomatic tensions between the two nations. "I think it was an important meeting for Brazil and for the United States. [...]Brazil is prepared to discuss any topic with any country in the world. We have no vetoes. There are no forbidden topics. The only thing we will not give up is our democracy and our sovereignty," Lula said. In the area of security, the Brazilian president proposed strengthening bilateral coordination against transnational criminal networks and defended the capacity of Brazilian institutions to confront drug trafficking and illegal arms trafficking, also noting that part of the weaponry used by criminal organisations in Brazil originates from the United States. "The desire to combat organised crime is something we all must share. [...] It is important to know that there is money laundering, which is carried out by US states," declared the Brazilian president. The visit marks Lula's first official trip to Washington during Trump's second term, as both sides seek to ease tensions over trade disputes, accusations of political interference and disagreements over regional security. Governments and international markets closely watched the meeting due to the economic and political weight of both nations on the American continent and the growing influence of China in Latin America."
