Lawmakers 'cashing in' on impeachment - Sara

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte said many were profiting from her impeachment case as it neared conclusion at the House of Representatives once the articles of impeachment are put to a vote before the plenary. She also urged those who received money for signing the articles of impeachment to give it to their constituents. Her comments come after several lawmakers said that around 180 to 210 lawmakers have manifested to sign the articles of impeachment when it reaches the plenary on May 11. Speaking to blogger Alvin Zarzate at The Hague on Thursday (early Friday morning Manila time) after visiting her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, the vice president was asked about her view regarding the confidence of several lawmakers that there were more than 106 votes, the minimum number needed, to impeach her. "So, a lot of people are profiting by using my name. I hope their constituents finally get a share of the money inside their pockets and their suitcases." Duterte said in Filipino and Bisaya. She also criticized the issuance of subpoenas to prominent pro-Duterte commentators, including Jay Sonza and Jeffrey Celiz, calling the government "sensitive" and "insecure" to their criticisms. Duterte urged the Marcos government to focus first on making the country peaceful and progressive instead of focusing on criticisms. She also slammed Palace Press Officer Clarissa Castro for telling her to read the Constitution over comments on her alleged preparations for the 2028 elections. "When Claire Castro speaks, don't pay attention to her or give her any importance. Because when you pay attention to her, it feeds her attention-seeking behavior. And the problem with that attention-seeking attitude is that she will bring embarrassment to our country. Because whenever she speaks, the seal of the Office of the President is right there." Duterte said.
