"US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire with Iran remained in effect after US forces exchanged fire with Iranian vessels during the transit of three Navy destroyers through the Strait of Hormuz, warning Tehran of severe consequences if a deal is not signed. "They trifled with us today. We blew them away," Trump told reporters in Washington DC on Thursday, confirming that the ceasefire is still in effect. "If there's no ceasefire, you're not going to have to know. You're just going to have to look at one big glow coming out of Iran. And they better sign their agreement fast," he asserted. Trump stated the ongoing nuclear talks were progressing but stressed, "They have to understand if it doesn't get signed, they're going to have a lot of pain. They're going to have a lot of pain. They want to sign it. I will tell you, they want to sign it a lot more than I do." He described the Hormuz confrontation in detail, saying Iranian forces fired missiles and drones at the three destroyers and sent 'stupid' small boats to intercept them. "Every missile was knocked down. Every drone was knocked down. And the people that shot it are no longer with us," Trump declared, adding that an Iranian tanker had its rudder shot out and was 'spinning around in circles' to avoid 'creating an environment'. "They should not have done that today," the president highlighted. "We were prepared." The incident follows a ceasefire agreed on April 8 after five and a half weeks of fighting. Direct talks in Islamabad ended without a deal, with a second round of negotiations ongoing after Trump extended the ceasefire to allow Iran to submit a unified proposal."
