"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected on Friday that Mexican consulates in the US are being used to carry out political activities against the government of the neighbouring country. The president's statements come after US broadcaster CBS News reported that the State Department launched a review of the 53 Mexican consulates operating in the United States. The outlet indicated that this measure, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, could lead to the closure of some diplomatic offices. During a press conference in Mexico City, Sheinbaum stated that consulates are dedicated to protecting Mexicans. "This idea that Mexican consulates are engaging in politics in the United States, it is completely false. What consulates do, which is their role, just like the United States consulate in Mexico, or those of other countries, is always to protect their citizens, while at the same time opening all possibilities," she said. According to reports, the measure is part of a broader effort to align US foreign policy with the priorities of Donald Trump's administration. For her part, Sheinbaum explained that Mexican consulates in the US carry out diplomatic work and provide support to Mexicans with procedures, as well as protection and legal assistance in the event of immigration raids. "In our Constitution, we have the self-determination of peoples, and just as we defend the self-determination of a people anywhere in the world, well, the United States also has its self-determination; we have no reason to influence United States politics from Mexico," he said. The president highlighted that her government was the first in the country's history to recognise the first ambassador of Palestine in Mexico and reiterated her support for it to "be recognised in its full scope as a country." Likewise, she instructed Foreign Affairs Secretary Roberto Velasco to "remain in contact and, in any case, see whether we can meet" with the relatives of the Mexicans aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, which departed from Greece this Friday bound for Gaza. Sheinbaum's statements come after the relatives requested an urgent meeting and her direct intervention to guarantee the safety of the Mexican nationals participating in the mission, warning that they face an 'imminent threat'."
