Nuclear in the bay - USS Nimitz arrives in Rio de Janeiro for joint exercises with Brazilian Navy

"The nuclear aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) arrived in Rio de Janeiro's Guanabara Bay on Friday as part of the multinational operation 'Southern Seas 2026', a series of military manoeuvres aimed at strengthening naval cooperation between the United States and Brazil. Footage shows Brazilian Navy technicians conducting radiological monitoring around the aircraft carrier while it remained anchored, to ensure safe conditions for the population and the ecosystem of Guanabara Bay, given its nuclear propulsion system. "We collected water at four points around the ship, precisely to also measure the radioactivity and the presence of radioactivity in the water," explained Marcos William, commander of the Brazilian Naval Nuclear Safety and Quality Secretariat. Brazilian authorities assured that the presence of the ship is solely in response to the international exercise agenda and not an operational combat mission. "It is here for the 2026 exercise. So it was a stop here by a navy that is a strategic partner of Brazil," William remarked. The visit includes joint exercises with the Brazilian Navy, such as interoperability training, tactical communications, air coordination, and maritime emergency response exercises and will remain in national waters until May 12. The USS Nimitz, one of the largest aircraft carriers in the world and the oldest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier still in active service, attracted the attention of locals and tourists. The 'Southern Seas 2026' operation is a multinational naval deployment led by the United States Navy that seeks to strengthen military cooperation with allied countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. For Brazil, the visit also represents an opportunity to exchange technical and operational experiences with the US Navy."
