"Thai Foreign Ministry deputy spokesperson Maratee Nalita Andamo called for rebuilding trust between Thailand and Cambodia on Friday, stating that both countries' foreign ministers have been tasked with developing 'confidence-building measures' to create a 'conducive' environment for effective dialogue. "We would very much like the negotiations to happen and to happen effectively, but we do need to improve the environment," she said at the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings in Cebu. The decision came after the prime ministers of Cambodia and Thailand held a rare meeting on Thursday on the sidelines of the summit, which the Philippines arranged. "Two leaders agreed to task their foreign ministers with further consultations to develop specific confidence-building measures with a view to rebuilding trust and confidence and gradually restoring bilateral relations," the deputy spokesperson added. She remarked that Thailand is working with its agencies to appoint the head of the Joint Boundary Commission. "There is no intention on the Thai side for a delay." Andamo said that Thailand sees Myanmar's new government releasing political prisoners as the first 'positive step'. "What Thailand is very much looking forward to is a resumption of dialogue between the different ethnic groups, and that will lead to a reconciliation process," she stressed. The border region between Thailand and Cambodia remains volatile following an escalation of fighting in late 2025 that continued into early 2026, causing casualties on both sides and damaging critical infrastructure."
