"The Copa Libertadores match between Independiente Medellin and Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in Colombia was suspended on Thursday night after crowd disturbances. Just three minutes after kickoff Colombian fans lit flares and threw objects onto the field, putting players and fans at risk. Footage shows a haze of smoke at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium, accompanied by whistles and protests from the fans after the match was suspended. The players were forced to retreat to the locker rooms, while authorities tried to contain the disorder in the stands. According to preliminary reports, the incident was orchestrated by supporters of the Colombian team in protest against the club's management over their recent elimination from Colombia's Liga BetPlay after a 2-1 defeat by Aguilas, leaving them out of the final stages and deepening the discontent among fans. Independiente Medellín issued a statement noting that the club understands the frustration of fans and respects their opinions, while calling for them to express themselves with respect. It added that it will work hand in hand with the authorities to clarify what happened and identify those responsible. So far, sports authorities and CONMEBOL have not confirmed whether the match will be resumed, rescheduled, or if disciplinary sanctions could be applied to the Colombian club. Article 24.2 of the CONMEBOL Disciplinary Code stipulates that when a team is considered responsible for a suspension, cancellation, or abandonment of a match, the resulting sanction will be a technical defeat with the opposing team declared the winner by 3-0."
