"Hundreds in Seoul marked the 81st anniversary of Victory Day with an Immortal Regiment march honouring Soviet soldiers who fought in the Second World War. Footage filmed on Saturday shows participants marching with flags, banners and portraits of fallen soldiers, led by Russian Ambassador to South Korea Georgy Zinoviev. "The Immortal Regiment is a memorial to the fallen who gave their lives in the fight against fascism and Japanese militarism. Therefore, this is a very important day for us. In our country, in Russia and in the CIS countries, there is not a single family that has not lost its relatives in that war," a participant said. "It is also a day of remembrance that we must pass on to our children so they remember that terrible war. In Russia, they say if you do not know your history, you will not build a future," she added. Victory Day is marked annually in Russia and several other countries on May 9. The main event, this year commemorating the 81st anniversary of the end of the Second World War, is the parade in the Russian capital. Russia confirmed around 27 million Soviet citizens died during World War II, one of the heaviest losses suffered by any country involved in the conflict. Western countries traditionally mark Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) on May 8, due to the time difference at the moment of the German surrender. On Friday, US President Donald Trump also announced a 'three day ceasefire' during Victory Day celebrations to run May 9-11, including an exchange of 1,000 prisoners per side. Trump said the initiative was his 'direct request' and had been agreed to by Russia and Ukraine. Russia initially announced a ceasefire with Ukraine for the period of May 8-10. The Russian Defence Ministry warned of a 'massive retaliatory missile strike on central Kiev' in the event of any attempts to disrupt the celebrations."
