Flowers of remembrance - MASSIVE queues as Berlin marks Victory Day at Soviet War Memorial

"Large queues formed at the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin’s Treptower Park on Saturday, as people gathered to lay flowers in tribute to those who died in the Second World War. Footage shows a large pile of flowers and a Russian flag placed inside the mausoleum beneath the 12-metre Liberator statue, which depicts a Soviet soldier holding a German child and a sword over a broken swastika. Berlin police had imposed restrictions on Russian, Soviet and other political symbols at several Soviet memorials on May 8 and 9, citing the risk of provocation and tensions linked to the conflict in Ukraine. Diplomats and Second World War veterans were reportedly exempt from the rules. This year marks the 81st anniversary of Victory Day, commemorating Nazi Germany’s surrender to Allied forces in 1945. Victory Day is observed in Russia and several other former Soviet states on May 9. Victory in Europe Day is marked in many Western countries on May 8, reflecting the time difference when Germany’s surrender came into effect."
