'Your victory is our victory!' - Hundreds celebrate Soviet triumph in WWII at Beijing Immortal Regiment march

"More than 800 people in Beijing on Saturday participated in the 'Immortal Regiment' march, marking the 81st anniversary of the victory of the Red Army over Nazi Germany in World War II. Footage captured at the Russian Embassy in China shows participants marching with portraits of their relatives who served during WWII. The demonstrators were also seen carrying a large banner reading 'Beijing, Immortal Regiment'. Russian actress and former member of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Maria Kozhevnikova, who was selected as the ambassador for the 'Flame of Memory' initiative and who transferred the piece of the flame to Beijing, talked about the importance of preserving the stories of war veterans for future generations. "I didn't expect that so many people would be at the Immortal Regiment today," she said. "Unfortunately, we cannot march in the Immortal Regiment in Moscow. For me, it was a great joy and happiness." Xue, a Chinese national who also took part in the march, said: “This victory is our victory as well - a victory over the common enemies of all nations." “It [this memorable date] unites us all. There is very little in the world right now that unites us. The memory that we hold means that we honour our ancestors,” said another participant. The 'Immortal Regiment' is a worldwide event held annually on May 9 during Russia's Victory Day celebrations. It was first launched in Russia to commemorate the sacrifices made by families during the war, but later extended to countries across the globe. "It unites us all. There is very little in the world right now that unites us. Secondly, the memory that we hold means that we honour our ancestors," said another participant, Gavriil. Victory Day is observed in Russia and several other former Soviet states on May 9. Victory in Europe Day is marked in many Western countries on May 8, reflecting the time difference when Germany’s surrender came into effect."
