"The Russian Cultural Centre in Beirut marked the 81st anniversary of Victory Day in the Second World War on Saturday, as officials used the occasion to call for the protection of national sovereignty. Footage shows participants arriving at the centre’s headquarters carrying photographs of soldiers, while the event also featured artistic and musical performances by children, alongside dance routines and interactive activities. "Russia remains committed to the noble principles of international legitimacy, the equality of sovereignty among states, and non-interference in their affairs," said Alexander Rodakov, Russian Ambassador to Lebanon. "We consistently call for the establishment of a balanced and indivisible global security system, and we intend to continue striving to preserve peace on earth," he added. Director of the Russian Cultural Centre in Beirut, Alexander Sorokin, echoed the remarks, offering support for Lebanon amid the ongoing regional unrest. "We have a particular appreciation for the struggle for independence. […] We have deep respect for this long legacy of defending sovereignty, and it is for this very reason that the symbolism of our shared victory in 1945 resonates so deeply in the hearts of our Lebanese friends," said Sorokin. This year marks the 81st anniversary of Victory Day in the Second World War, when Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allied forces in 1945. Victory Day is celebrated in Russia and a number of other countries on May 9, whilst Western nations celebrate it on May 8 due to time zone differences at the moment of surrender. The Kremlin said that this year’s military parade in Red Square had been scaled back due to 'terrorist threats' from Ukraine, whilst the Russian Ministry of Defence warned of a 'large-scale military response against Kyiv' in the event of any attempt to disrupt the celebrations. US President Donald Trump also announced a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine from 9 to 11 May, involving the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side. Both Moscow and Kyiv backed the initiative."
