"The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) celebrated World Red Cross Day in Accra with a blood donation drive, first aid demonstrations and community health activities under the theme 'United in Humanity'. Footage filmed on Friday shows volunteers cheering in the auditorium. They can be seen carrying out a mock rescue and first aid demonstration on stage, while later a dance performance also takes place. "It is a clear signal that institutions like the Ghana Red Cross Society are not optional, but essential," said Dr. Edward Donkoh, President of the Ghana Red Cross Society. "In responding to this evolving reality, our work has moved beyond emergency response to building resilience, preparedness, and long-term recovery." Students also volunteered to learn first aid and emergency response techniques. "I learned some of the causes, such as standing for long periods, head injuries, lack of oxygen to the brain, trauma, and other conditions," a student volunteer noted after a workshop on dealing with unconscious patients. The International Red Cross was founded in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland, by Henry Dunant. It consists of 191 member National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which are part of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). These societies operate as local humanitarian organisations, with a combined network of around 17 million volunteers and staff, forming the largest humanitarian network in the world."
