"Protesters marched in Berlin on Saturday against the policies of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accusing his government of prioritising military spending over domestic welfare. Footage shows demonstrators moving through the city with banners criticising government priorities, including one reading: 'Focus on our own schools instead of other countries', while a vehicle carries a mounted atomic bomb statue with a figure depicting Merz clinging to it, as police vans follow. "This is a replica of the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima," a protester explained the display's symbolism, addressing the crowd from the vehicle. He also criticised Germany's current policy direction, linking it to economic and social pressures. "This is progress in a country where industry is being destroyed, where our pensions are being destroyed, where our healthcare is being destroyed, and where we no longer have a roof over our heads," the protester said, adding that Germany is being 'oriented towards a war economy.' The demonstration comes amid ongoing debate in Germany over defence spending and the country's long-term military commitments within NATO, including a target of spending around 2 percent of GDP on defence. In recent years, Berlin has increased military investment through a special 100 billion EUR (117.8 billion USD) defence fund approved to modernise the Bundeswehr, covering procurement programmes for air defence systems, armoured vehicles and ammunition stockpiles."
