"Russian Ambassador to Cuba Viktor Koronelli attended a commemorative ceremony in Havana on Saturday to pay tribute to Soviet soldiers who died in Cuba during internationalist missions. Footage shows Cuban soldiers marching as Koronelli and other officials accompany them, before the ambassador leads a floral offering ceremony and places flowers at the Mausoleum of the Soviet Internationalist Soldier, where the remains of 67 soldiers rest. The soldiers died during Soviet military missions in Cuba in the 1960s, including the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when the USSR stationed troops on the island amid escalating tensions with the United States. The event included the laying of flower bouquets before the flame and the sculpture of General Issa Pliyev, Soviet hero of World War II and head of troops in Cuba in 1962, accompanied by hymns, speeches, and military honours. In addition to the members of the Russian delegation, the event was attended by leaders of the Cuban government and members of the Armed Forces, as well as by allied diplomats, including Belarusian Ambassador to Cuba Vitali Barchuk. The ceremony marked the 81st anniversary of Victory Day, which commemorates the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II."
