'The carnage must end' - Anti-war protesters detained in Jerusalem as Israeli police deploy water cannons

"Israeli police used water cannon to disperse protesters in Jerusalem on Saturday during a demonstration against Israeli government policies and ongoing military operations in the region. Footage shows police arresting demonstrators during clashes, as protesters block roads and march carrying Israeli flags and signs reading 'Stop ethnic cleansing / Palestinian lives matter'. Speaking during the protest, participants criticised Israeli actions in Gaza and called for a ceasefire. "We have to end the occupation. We have to resist ethnic cleansing," protester Emanuelle said, adding that demonstrators were advocating for "a future of safety and equal rights for everyone in this land." She also called for diplomacy instead of further military action. "The carnage must end. The violence must stop. America, Israel need to stop bombing Iranian civilians," Emanuelle stated. Demonstrator Raz accused the government of prolonging the conflict and undermining democratic institutions. "I'm here to protest against my government's, against the things that my government has been doing for more than three years now. Three and a half years. The demolition of our democracy, this never-ending war, which seems part of the policy of this government," he said. Raz persisted, "War is something that may be legitimate after you've tried anything else. And from my point of view, nothing else has been attempted." The protest comes amid continued anti-government demonstrations in Israel that intensified following the outbreak of the Gaza war. The Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led attacks killed 1,139 people, mostly Israeli civilians, and saw more than 200 people taken hostage. Israel then launched a military campaign in Gaza, including airstrikes and a ground offensive. According to Gaza health authorities, 72,736 Palestinians were killed, and 172,535 were injured at the time of publication."
