"Supporters of Niger’s ruling National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) gathered in the capital Niamey on Saturday for a rally in support of the military authorities, amid heightened security concerns across the Sahel region following recent attacks in neighbouring Mali. Footage shows military officials and supporters gathering in central Niamey, holding banners bearing slogans and messages of national unity. Participants voiced support for the ruling party and framed the rally as a show of sovereignty and resistance to external interference. Speaking at the event, Colonel Boubacar Soumana Garanke, Chief Executive of Niamey City, said the country is facing attempts to undermine its independence. “Behind certain political and media manoeuvres lie Machiavellian interests determined to prevent Niger and the Sahel states from fully exercising their sovereignty,” he said. Other participants highlighted economic and political grievances, expressing support for the current authorities and calling for continued stability under military leadership. Issifou Idrissa, a participant at the rally, said Niger had moved beyond what he described as past systems of exploitation. “Today, we have a government that does us credit. Men of integrity,” he said, adding that the country must continue on its current path of governance. Another speaker, Djibrila Gado, a civil society activist, referred to recent security incidents in the region and accused external actors of involvement in destabilisation efforts. The rally comes as Niger’s military authorities continue to consolidate power following the 2023 coup that brought the CNSP to leadership. Since then, the government has implemented a series of political and institutional changes."
