"On Saturday, May 9, hundreds of pro-European supporters gathered near University Square in Bucharest to celebrate 'Europe Day' and reaffirm Romania's commitment to the values of the European Union (EU). Footage shows participants waving EU and Romanian flags as they march towards Victory Square. Later, they are seen singing national anthem and anthem of the EU, displaying their support for democracy and the rule of law. "Romania is a profoundly pro-European country, and this is the place to celebrate it alongside the people that give that path," said the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu. The minister also stated that Romania has strong prospects with a growing economy and vibrant youth educational programs, all credited towards the EU policy. "Romanians living, working, and attending education in European countries, but also European citizens here in Romania. The Erasmus graduates are all proof of how strong the European project is for us and our future," Toiu added. According to rally participants, Romania's membership in the European Union has brought benefits through greater integration, as Europe's defense policy provides an additional layer of protection for the country. "I support a unified fiscal budget. I support a defence union from a European perspective, because nowadays, with the geopolitical tensions, I think that Europe should be stronger now more than ever. And Romania is a big part of that," stated one participant. "Unfortunately, what happens now is sad, and we are worried. Mr. president Nicusor Dan disappointed us a lot; he hid, he deceived our expectations," added another rally goer criticizing the current political situation. Romania officially joined the European Union in 2007, alongside neighbouring Bulgaria, marking the fifth enlargement and making it the 27th member state. Europe Day, celebrated annually on May 9, commemorates the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community and paved the way for the European Union. The day focuses on the unity and values of the EU, with open doors to institutions and events in member states."
