"Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico criticised European Union energy policy delivering remarks in Bratislava on Sunday, as he warned against plans to phase out Russian gas imports. "According to the decision of the European Commission, Russian gas will end. We have filed a complaint against it. Whether the relevant court will decide by 2027, I do not know, but our official stance is, let's diversify the supply options for all fuels, but also keep open the possibility when it comes to Russian oil and gas, what's the matter with that?" Fico said. "It was clearly stated to us that the Americans have a huge interest in buying all transit infrastructures, so that will be really great fun. So the Russians will supply the Americans with gas and oil at standard prices, and the Americans will sell it to us with an American high-margin surcharge. Are we such idiots already?" he added. It comes as the European Union continues to pursue its REPowerEU strategy, aimed at ending reliance on Russian fossil fuels following the escalation of the war in Ukraine in 2022. The ban will cut liquefied natural gas by the end of 2026 and pipeline gas by 30 September 2027, with a potential short extension. Member states must also show how they will replace those supplies. The Slovak leader has repeatedly argued that rapid disengagement from Russian energy risks raising costs for smaller and more import-dependent economies in Central Europe. Countries in the region have long relied on established pipeline infrastructure linked to Russian supply routes, making the transition more complex and expensive."
