Medical transfer - 14 Spanish evacuees from hantavirus-infected ship arrive in Madrid's Gomez Ulla Hospital

"A motorcade transporting Spanish nationals evacuated from the hantavirus-hit cruise ship arrived at Gomez Ulla Hospital in Madrid on Sunday. Earlier on the same day WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reassured that the public health risk from the hantavirus involved in the cruise ship outbreak in Spain remained low, as passengers underwent a medical testing protocol. In turn, Spanish Minister of Health, Monica Garcia, added that epidemiological tests ensured the evacuees are 'asymptomatic'. The ship remained under controlled isolation measures offshore after Spanish authorities authorised it to anchor near Granadilla in the Canary Islands under strict health conditions. Nearly 150 passengers were evacuated in stages for screening and repatriation flights, which were scheduled to continue through Monday, May 11. Authorities said those remaining on board were kept separate from the local population as medical teams implemented quarantine and monitoring measures while continuing investigations into the outbreak. The incident began during the vessel's South America itinerary, with initial exposure believed to have occurred before it departed Ushuaia on April 1. Contact tracing later expanded across multiple countries after passengers disembarked at different ports, including Saint Helena, before the outbreak was confirmed. Health officials in South Africa reported tracing contacts after a passenger fell seriously ill during travel and later died after being removed from a flight in Johannesburg. Saint Helena authorities also confirmed local contacts were identified and given health guidance. The World Health Organisation reported a total of eight cases linked to the outbreak, including six confirmed and two probable, with three deaths recorded."
