VP Sara will be impeached — Benitez

MANILA, Philippines — House Deputy Speaker and Bacolod Lone District Rep. Albee Benitez on Sunday expressed confidence that Vice President Sara Duterte will be impeached on Monday, May 11, when the House of Representatives will vote on the Articles of Impeachment against the country's second highest official. Under the Constitution, at least one-third of all House members, in this case 106 votes, will be needed to impeach the vice president and transmit the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate for trial. In February 2025, 215 members of the House voted to impeach Duterte. However, no trial was held by the Senate, which archived the impeachment complaint after the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional. Several lawmakers have declared that gathering 106 votes will not be difficult. Benitez said that about 200 members of the House of Representatives will vote to impeach Duterte. "In all likelihood, the Vice President will be impeached, based on the evidence presented," said Benitez, who leads the Visayan Bloc in the House. He said that a majority of the Visayan Bloc members are solidly behind the impeachment push. "One hundred percent of the congressmen in the Negros Island Region will vote in favor of the impeachment," Benitez added. Justice panel chair Batangas 2nd District Rep. Gerville Luistro said the committee on justice is prepared to defend before the plenary the panel’s findings, evidence and proceedings that led to the unanimous approval of the impeachment report. “We are anticipating that this coming Monday, we will be given the opportunity to defend the committee report, to defend the findings of probable cause, to defend the Articles of Impeachment,” Luistro said. The Committee on Justice voted unanimously to approve the committee report and resolution for plenary deliberations. Luistro said there will be nominal voting, with each House member individually called to cast a yes or no vote.
