MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Storm Caloy, the third cyclone this year, is unlikely to affect the country directly, even though its center was spotted over northeastern Mindanao, the state-run weather agency said on Sunday. Weather specialist Veronica Torres of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Caloy is moving northwestward at 15 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 65kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80kph. “Again, Caloy remains unlikely to affect the archipelago directly, but its trough, or extension, was expected to bring rain over the eastern section of the Visayas and Mindanao later in the day,” the Pagasa forecaster said. Meanwhile, Pagasa said it has spotted another weather disturbance, a low-pressure area (LPA), outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Estimated at 2,705 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao (outside PAR), the LPA also has a slim chance to enter PAR and influence the country's weather, Torres said in a 5 a.m. briefing. Over the next 24 hours, Pagasa said the easterlies – winds that pass through the Pacific Ocean and carry warm, humid weather – would also bring partly cloudy or overcast skies, with isolated downpours or thunderstorms over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.
