"Reindeer herders in the Priuralsky District of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region began the traditional drive of their herds across the Ob River to summer pastures. Footage taken on May 2 shows herders on snowmobiles leading the animals across the tundra. According to reindeer herder Konstantin Klimov, the reindeer cover enormous distances during their seasonal migrations in winter and summer. "It's about 250-300 kilometres one way. A round trip would be about 500-600 kilometres," he pointed out. In turn, Alexei Kondygin, a shepherd at the 'Baidaratsky' state farm, explained how the herd crossed the Ob River. "The reindeer are already used to it. They'll cross it. We'll tie a working male to the back to nudge the others along and let the lead reindeer go first. The rest will follow him," he said. 'Kaslanie' is the traditional seasonal migration of reindeer herding teams. It takes place when the pasture is depleted and can no longer sustain the animals. The herds usually spend the winter on the border between the Priuralsky and Nadymsky districts of the region, and the summer by the Kara Sea and near the Ural Mountains."
