MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Storm Caloy has weakened into a tropical depression while moving over the Philippine Sea, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Monday. However, its trough or extension has been affecting Eastern Samar and Dinagat Islands where cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms would occur, weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said. In a 5 a.m. briefing, Aurelio said that “Caloy is unlikely to directly affect the country. “Caloy will continue moving west northwestward in the next 12 hours and will remain over the Philippine Sea, far from the Philippine landmass,” he said. Pagasa said the low pressure area spotted off northeastern Mindanao also has a slim chance of affecting the country and was unlikely to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility. It said the easterlies – winds that pass through the Pacific Ocean and carry warm, humid weather – remains the prevailing weather system, affecting Metro Manila and the rest of the country. The easterlies will bring partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms especially during late afternoon or at night, it added.
