Whiteout emergency - Roads buried as heavy snowstorm paralyses parts of West Siberia

"A powerful snowstorm swept through Khanty-Mansiysk and other towns in western Siberia, catching several Russian regions off guard, including the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region. Footage from the region's administrative centre on Monday shows a raging blizzard blanketing streets. In the town of Noyabrsk, deep snowdrifts have already piled up, burying roads and public spaces. The Khanty-Mansiysk Hydrometeorological Center forecasts strong winds with gusts of up to 24 metres per second in eastern regions overnight. Earlier, Yugra Governor Ruslan Kukharuk announced on his Telegram channel that roads in the region would be temporarily closed due to bad weather conditions. "Work is underway to clear snow from the roads to ensure traffic safety. The situation is being constantly monitored, and emergency services are on high alert and co-ordinating closely with one another," he stated. Alexei Romanov, the mayor of Noyabrsk, announced that a state of heightened alert had been declared in the municipality. "All management companies and homeowners' associations are focusing their efforts on clearing courtyards," Romanov noted. "We have concentrated our resources on clearing the city's public facilities. Nurseries will operate as normal, while schoolchildren will continue with distance learning." Romanov added that public service workers are still dealing with the aftermath of the snowstorm, with snow reaching around 80 centimetres in some areas of the city."
