Final evacuations - Last passengers disembark hantavirus-hit cruise in Tenerife as ship departs for Netherlands

"The final wave of passengers disembarked the MV Hondius in Tenerife on Monday as the ship prepared to sail for the Netherlands, marking the end of a tense onboard quarantine triggered by a hantavirus outbreak that halted its voyage. Footage shows the vessel docking at the Port of Granadilla, where passengers evacuated the ship while wearing protective gear. More than 90 passengers had already left the ship on Sunday, while Monday's operation focused on the remaining travellers. A small number of crew members stayed on board to sail the vessel to Rotterdam, where it is set to undergo disinfection work. The cruise ship anchored near the Port of Granadilla in Spain's Canary Islands early on Sunday. Dozens were evacuated in stages for medical screening and repatriation flights scheduled to continue through Monday. 23 counties - including Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, the US and the UK - are participating in what Spanish authorities have described as an 'unprecedented operation.' The outbreak at the cruise ship is believed to have begun after exposure during the ship's South America itinerary, before it left Ushuaia on April 1. Contact tracing has since expanded across several continents after some passengers left the ship in Saint Helena before the outbreak was confirmed. South African authorities traced contacts after a Dutch woman became seriously ill during travel and died after being taken off a flight in Johannesburg. Saint Helena officials said local contacts had been identified and given health guidance. The World Health Organisation reported a total of nine cases, including seven laboratory-confirmed and two probable infections, with three resulting in deaths."
