Stalemate continues - Ships remain anchored in Strait of Hormuz after Trump rejects Iranian response, discusses 'Project Freedom Plus'

"Iranian state television on Tuesday released footage showing ships anchored in the Strait of Hormuz, following Iran’s submission of a formal response to the latest US peace proposal on Saturday, delivered via Pakistani mediators. The location and date of the footage cannot be independently verified. US President Donald Trump subsequently described Iran’s response in a media interview as "completely unacceptable". He raised the possibility of launching 'Project Freedom Plus' - a new maritime initiative designed to forcibly guide international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz - should negotiations fail to progress. On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi commented on the US rejection, noting that the reply followed "10 weeks of conflict involving US and Israeli strikes, the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which disrupted over 16,000 ships." Araghchi explained that the Iranian proposal, conveyed via Islamabad, included demands for an "immediate ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian sovereignty, war reparations, the full lifting of sanctions, and the release of frozen assets". He further noted that any "rollback of the nuclear program is minimal or postponed". The current crisis escalated following a joint US-Israeli military operation on 28 February. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and appointed his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor, responding with missile strikes across Israel and the wider region. Although President Trump announced a truce on 8 April to facilitate negotiations, and Islamabad hosted a preliminary round of talks on 11 April, a second round has yet to materialise. In the interim, Tehran continues to restrict traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, while the US Navy maintains a blockade of Iranian ports despite the standing ceasefire agreement."
