"German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was sensationally booed during a speech to trade unionists - as he defended his cuts to healthcare and pensions in Berlin on Tuesday. "Ladies and gentlemen, none of this is out of malice from the federal government or me. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that is demographics and mathematics," he said, as loud boos, jeers and even laughter rang out in the hall. Merz's government has argued that the reforms are needed to tackle escalating costs and boost the economy. He was speaking at the Congress of the German Trade Union Confederation. Critics and political opponents have argued that he has managed to find the money for his huge splurges on defence spending - with the country increasingly pivoting to a war economy - as well as billions spent on arms and support for Ukraine."
