'Africa is the solution, not problem' - Ruto urges end to aid dependency, calls for investment-driven future at Nairobi summit

"Kenyan President William Ruto on Tuesday urged African nations to move beyond aid dependency and unsustainable debt, calling instead for investment-led growth and ‘mutually beneficial partnerships.’ Speaking at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Ruto said Africa should be viewed as a global opportunity rather than a burden. “Africa is not part of the global problem. Africa is, in fact, the solution to the global challenges that exist today,” Ruto said. “What Africa requires today is not charity but investment, not destruction but value creation, not dependency but mutually beneficial partnerships capable of unlocking shared prosperity,” he stressed. “That is the essence of the Africa Forward Summit.” The Kenyan leader also criticised what he described as structural inequalities in the global financial system, saying African countries continue to face unfair borrowing costs and distorted risk perceptions. “There is capital in Africa, but Africa's development projects remain starved for financing,” Ruto said, noting the continent holds more than four trillion dollars in domestic capital. The France-Africa Forward Summit takes place in Nairobi from May 11-12, focusing on digital sovereignty and reforming the global financial system. In recent years, leaders across West Africa have demanded that the French withdraw their military amid much anger over France's colonial legacy on the continent, and ongoing claims of 'neo-colonialist interference'. Those countries include Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal and the Ivory Coast."
