"NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte highlighted Montenegro's growing strategic importance amid mounting global instability. This was said during a joint press conference with Prime Minister of Montenegro Milojko Spajic in Podgorica on Tuesday. "Montenegro, when it comes to NATO, is one of the staunchest allies. And when it comes to the bilateral relationship with the United States, Montenegro is seen by the United States, I know this from my American friends, as a staunch ally of the United States within NATO, but also bilaterally," he said. The NATO chief also praised Montenegro for already spending more than two percent of GDP on defence, as the alliance pushes members towards a new five percent target agreed at The Hague summit earlier this year, while crediting US President Donald Trump for accelerating defence spending commitments across the alliance. Rutte insisted NATO was entering a period of renewed strength driven by higher military spending, expanding industrial production and preparations for future threats. "We need strong societies defended by strong militaries because we live in a more dangerous world. Russia continues to wage a war of aggression against Ukraine. China is becoming more assertive and our southern neighbourhood is volatile. NATO allies must invest more in defence," he emphasised. During his visit to Podgorica, Rutte is expected to meet the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatovic, and later address students of the Faculty of Political Sciences."
