Finnish police are calling for changes to legislation on face coverings at demonstrations after violent incidents during May Day protests in Tampere triggered debate over public safety and protest rights. Police Director Sanna Heikinheimo said current laws make it difficult for officers to intervene when demonstrators cover their faces during public gatherings. Under Finnish law, wearing a mask or other face covering at a public assembly is prohibited only if authorities can show there is an obvious intent to commit a crime.
