"Hundreds of residents in the West Bank city of Ramallah marked the 78th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba on Tuesday, with similar events held across the Palestinian territories, according to local media. Footage shows participants marching through the city, waving large Palestinian flags and carrying signs with messages including: “The Nakba is our bleeding wound.” Some participants were also seen holding symbolic keys, referring to the right of return to their original homes. Chairman of the Higher Committee for Commemorating Nakba Day, Mohammed Alian, said the event spreads the message that Palestinians remain committed to their right of return and that ‘the occupation’s crimes’ will not deter them from continuing their struggle. “Today, our message is that the elders have passed away, but the young have not forgotten and will never forget. We will pass the Palestinian narrative down through the generations. We will give them the key to the home and teach them that the right of return is legitimate,” said local resident Amira Rimawi. Member of the Central Committee of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front, Nasra al-Qabalani, said Palestinians would continue their struggle to achieve the right of return, stressing that they are the rightful owners of the land. Local media reported that events commemorating the 78th anniversary of the Nakba included the mass march and a central festival in Ramallah held under the slogan: “We Will Not Leave… Our Roots Are Deeper Than Your Destruction.” The agency added that governorates including Nablus, Tulkarm, Salfit, and Tubas also held commemorative events on Monday that drew officials and crowds. Similar activities were organised in Gaza, including the National Return Festival in Khan Younis. Every year on May 15, Palestinians and their supporters around the world commemorate the Nakba, or ‘catastrophe’, of 1948, when an estimated 750,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes and villages following the establishment of the Israeli state.
