"Former US army officer and military expert Stanislav Krapivnik revealed that Russia's 'gamechanging' new intercontinental ballistic missile had the potential to destroy 'any major city' - and should make any 'rational' adversary think twice before attacking Moscow. He was speaking shortly after Russia confirmed the latest successful test launch of the 'Sarmat' on Tuesday, the latest addition to the county's defensive shield - and Krapivnik gave a flavour of what could happen in a city such as Paris if the unthinkable happened and Moscow was forced to strike back. "In the centre of Paris, the very centre, there wouldn't be anything left. The heat is such that the Eiffel Tower would probably melt," he said, as he explained exactly why the new missile was almost impossible for any air defences to take down. "It can go east to west. It can go north to south. It can go south to north," he said. "The traditional direction that ballistic missiles from Russia to America, from America to Russia is over the North Pole. So everything is set up for detection and countering missiles that are coming over the North Pole. So if the missile can go over the South Pole, that's a new direction that has to be covered. For now, it would be a game-changer," he said. That unique, suborbital flight trajectory via both North and South poles would bypass Western defences concentrated on the northern routes - and with 'Avangard' hypersonic glide vehicles delivering the payload, it was a whole new ball game. "Any of your anti-aircraft systems, they don't know where to shoot because the system is constantly, the glide vehicle is constantly changing positions and thus changing trajectories," he said. "There's nothing that you can pump into a computer system fast enough, at least in the West."He also suggested that EU leaders like Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and Foreign Policy head Kaja Kallas "they don't have a concept of what this could really do." "But for the more rational person, the more rational minded person, that should be a very scary fact," he added. Earlier, Vladimir Putin described it as the 'most powerful missile system in the world' with 'four times' the power of any Western counterpart, and a range of 35,000km. He also announced that it would be put on combat duty by the end of the year."
