"Doctors Without Borders evacuated its hospital in the Cite Soleil neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince after intense armed clashes between criminal groups forced the suspension of operations. Speaking from the Haitian capital, MSF Head of Mission Thomas Curbillon said fighting on May 10 in Cite Soleil and Croix-des-Bouquets left dozens of people injured. "The conditions that led Doctors Without Borders to temporarily suspend activities at Cite Soleil hospital were mainly linked to heavy fighting very close to the facility. During the clashes, several stray bullets entered the hospital compound and hit the buildings. One of our guards, who was on duty at one of the gates, was also injured by gunfire," Curbillon recalled. The organisation was sheltering around 130 people inside the facility, including displaced residents, staff and their families. Curbillon said many displaced people managed to leave the hospital early the following morning during a brief pause in the fighting. "Unfortunately, the surge in violence that Cite Soleil has experienced over the past two days has forced us to evacuate and temporarily suspend our activities. And I stress that this suspension is temporary. We fully intend to resume operations as soon as possible so we can continue providing the medical care people across the neighbourhoods of Cite Soleil urgently need," he concluded. On Monday, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announced an emergency evacuation of its hospital in Cite Soleil due to growing, intense clashes in Port-au-Prince. The group has treated over 40 gunshot victims and provided temporary shelter to 800 people fleeing the fresh wave of violence triggered by the 'Chen Mechan' gang. In response to ongoing violence in April, the UN Security Council approved a 5,550-member force in September, with some troops from Chad already deployed in the area. A recent report from the International Organisation for Migration revealed that gang violence has displaced over 1.4 million people in Haiti, with hundreds of thousands living in deplorable conditions as the state struggles to regain control."
