"Real Madrid President Florentino Perez on Tuesday called an emergency press conference to announce that he had called for elections as the club faces a trophy drought and infighting. "I am sorry to tell you […] I am not going to resign," Perez told reporters at the Valdebebas training complex in Madrid. "Instead, I have asked the Electoral Board to begin the electoral process for the board elections." He said an 'absurd campaign' is being run against him, vowing to fight to the end. "They would have to remove me by force, because I truly have the support of all Real Madrid members, and that is why I want elections, and I want to run," he reiterated. The press conference remained tense as Perez exchanged harsh comments with journalists, saying that he would put an end to the 'anti-Madrid movement' in some sectors of the press. "We have to put an end to this absurd campaign that currently exists against Madrid […] There has never been a more glorious Real Madrid in history," he added. "They voted me the best president in the club's history." Responding to a question by an ABC reporter, he said he would cancel his subscription to the Australian broadcaster. "Look at today's newspapers. There are two articles in ABC today against Madrid. I think one was written by a woman who I do not even know if she understands football," he said. The press conference came as the club suffered a 2-0 loss to Barcelona in El Clasico on May 10, handing over the La Liga title to their arch rivals, and Madrid finished its second consecutive season without a major trophy."
