Journey through Hormuz - Indian MEA spox confirms passage of 11 merchant ships ahead of talks with Iran's Araghchi at BRICS meeting

"Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that 11 Indian merchant ships safely transitioned through the Strait of Hormuz over the past five days following diplomatic efforts with Iran. "Of the ships that were supposed to come through the Strait of Hormuz, 11 have already arrived, and 13 ships of ours are still there," he stated at a press conference in Delhi on Wednesday. The remaining 13 ships, including two LNG carriers chartered by Petronet and several bulkers carrying steel coils, are currently in the Gulf, waiting for safe passage. The announcement comes as India and Iran are expected to discuss the safe passage of Indian-flagged vessels through the Strait of Hormuz on the sidelines of the BRICS Sherpa and BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi this week. The upcoming two-day foreign ministers' meeting will bring together representatives from 10 member countries to discuss global issues, economic resilience, and cooperation. "During the meeting, the foreign ministers of BRICS member countries will exchange views on global and regional issues of mutual interest. On the second day, BRICS members and partner countries will participate in a session, themed 'BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability'," Jaiswal commented. Chaired by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting is scheduled to run from May 14 to 15. It has been over half a year since the last such ministerial meeting was held on September 26, 2025, on the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly."
