System 7 transformed the Mac on May 13, 1991

When Apple released System 7 on May 13, 1991, it was the biggest change to the Mac since the start. While it came with some problems, it also brought us features we still use today, 35 years later. Back in the 1990s, software came in boxes It was a very different world in 1991. If you were a Mac owner, the release of System 7 was a thrill that had been years in the making. The New York Times even summed up the release by just saying that, "for Macintosh users, a very long wait is over." This is partly because System 7 didn't make a giant impact outside of Mac users, though. To Windows users who even noticed, it was perhaps seen as more of a catch-up release than Apple would have liked. But if you had been working intensely with System 6, you wanted 7 badly.
