TACLOBAN CITY — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Eastern Visayas has warned the public against harvesting, selling and eating shellfish from Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar and the coastal waters of Daram, Samar after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of toxic red tide beyond safe regulatory levels. In Shellfish Bulletin No. 10 issued on Tuesday, May 12, BFAR said shellfish samples collected from the affected waters tested positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP), a marine toxin that can cause serious illness and may be fatal when contaminated shellfish are consumed.
